In this area, you will find a collection of resources which have been produced to support subject teachers across a wide range of subject areas, alongside those developed by other local and national schools and training and education providers and teaching organisations, including the national STEM Centre.


The benefits of utilising Careers in the Classroom are:

  1. Saving subject teachers time.
  2. Enhancing learning for students and improved academic outcomes.
  3. Enhance the development of employability and enterprise skills for students.
  4. Improving destination measures of students fulfilling the government's careers strategy, particularly Gatsby benchmark 4- Linking curriculum learning to careers.
  5. Satisfying Ofsted requirements and aspirations in relation to careers.

Gatsby benchmark 4 requires all teachers to link curriculum learning with careers. STEM subject teachers, in particular, should highlight the relevance of STEM subjects for a wide range of future career paths.

Although primarily supporting Gatsby Benchmark 4, when utilised effectively, the resources also contribute to Benchmark 2 - Learning from career and labour market information, Benchmark 5 - encounters with employers and employees, and Benchmark 7 - encounters with further and higher education.

Who Can Access

Teaching staff from any school or education and dtraining provider contributing to the Hull, East Riding, and North Yorkshire Coast Online Careers Gateway can request a login to access the resources by clicking on the Register button and completing their details.

How To Access

Once logged on you will see the vast array of resources catgorised by Key Stages, (EYFS through to KS5), Subject Area (22 Key Subjects), and by category of resource (Lesson Plans, Potential Employer Links, Training, Film, Case Studies, Useful Websites, Toolkits and Enterprise Activities) We can even help you to find an appropriate employer to support your lesson(s) by completing the Employer Involvement Request Form. Please bear in mind although the majority of employers are committed to supporting education and trainingm they do need to be able to manage their time too, so please allow a minimum of 6 weeks notice for use to secure the right employer and individual for your lesson or activity.

Background to the Governments Careers Strategy

The Government's Careers Strategy published on 4 December 2017, sets out a long-term plan to build a world class careers system that will help young people and adults choose the career that is right for them. The statutory guidance (updated October 2018) expands on this aim to make sure that all young people in secondary school get a programme of advice and guidance that is stable, structured, and delivered by individuals with the right skills and experience. To achieve this aim, the careers strategy sets out that every school and academy providing secondary education should use the Gatsby Charitable Foundation's Eight Benchmarks to develop and improve their careers provision. Although not a statutory framework, by adopting the Benchmarks schools can be confident that they are fulfilling their legal duties, however the Benchmarks go further by defining all the elements of an excellent careers programme, based on the best national and international research. The Government's expectation is that school begin to work towards the Benchmarks now and meet them by the end of 2020. Additionally, careers guidance will continue to be considered during Ofsted inspections, as set out in Ofsted's Common Inspection Framework and School Inspection Handbook.
